Dear Registered Nurses (RN) of the Georgia Nurses Association and American Nurses Association- New York

You are being invited to participate in a research study. This project focuses on Type 2 workplace violence, specifically examining its impact on registered nurses and whether de-escalation techniques impact their confidence in dealing with aggressive patients. The first part of the project collects non- identifiable demographic information. The project includes a two-part questionnaire of Thackrey’s Confidence in Coping with Patient Aggression Instrument. This questionnaire will take less than 10 minutes to complete and will have 10 questions about confidence in handling aggressive patients. There will be a link to a PowerPoint with videos to learn about de-escalation techniques. The PowerPoint encompasses videos and audio learning for each slide. It will take 30 minutes to complete. After completing the PowerPoint there will be a link to the post survey. The Confidence in Coping with Patient Aggression Instrument will be used as a post-survey to measure if confidence levels in managing patients with aggressive behavior has changed after learning de-escalation techniques.

Through your voluntary participation in this project, my goal is to understand if de-escalation techniques influence confidence levels when managing aggressive patients and to determine if there is a need to create a training program to assist nurses in managing aggressive patients. The results of this needs assessment project will be shared with the Georgia Nurses Association and American Nurses Association- New York.

This research project has been developed as part of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program through Georgia State University.
